CV: Text
I am interested in the relationships between the underlying structure and the picture plane, in the hierarchy that exists between materials, surface, and support in painting. The material relationship between surface and structure has often been one where the focus is on the paint which acts like a protagonist while the rest of the material behaves like the supporting cast, or like the visible outer skin which covers the bone structure. But what happens when the hidden structural materials of a painting become perceivable, when they become form? How does the relationship between the viewer and the painting function when the picture plane is not flat? How have others navigated this approach to painting? These are questions which I am thinking through as I work with each material and find that an attention to surface also means an acknowledgement of the skeleton.
